Resurrecting lost ancient myoglobin proteins to elucidate mechanisms of diving adaptation in mammals

(Hiroshi Imamura, Yasuhiro Isogai, Tsuyoshi Shirai, Biophysics and Physicobiology 23, e230004 (2026), DOI: 10.2142/biophysico.bppb-v23.0004)

Story of the cover: Data science methodologies can be applied to "molecular archeology." It provides a means to obtain biophysically solid data on the ecology of past organisms while enabling highly "dreaming" research. This review explains the results of analyzing the marine-diving adaptation of myoglobin. The illustration depicts the reconstruction of past life forms, imagined by using laboratory equipment as weapons. Illustration credited to Ms. Minami Sakamoto (undergraduate student in the Faculty of Bioscience at Nagahama Institute of Bio-Science and Technology).
