Open positions
Team Leader (Principal Investigator)
One position

Qualifications
1.A holder of Ph.D. or equivalent degree.
2.Has relevant knowledge, experience and ability to oversee and carry out the research projects outlined under Research Field.

Work location
RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (Kobe Campus-East-West)
2-2-3 Minatojima-minamimachi, Chuo-ku, Kobe, Hyogo, 650-0047, Japan

Research field
The RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (BDR) aims to understand the general principles of living systems through unraveling the temporal and spatial dynamics of biological phenomena unfolding over the course of their lifespan from development and birth to aging and death. Researchers at the Center use a wide range of interdisciplinary approaches to address this overarching theme such as imaging, multi-omics, theory, molecular biology, stem cell biology, organoids, and the use of diverse animal models.
RIKEN BDR is now actively recruiting a talented Team Leader (Principal Investigator) who conducts challenging and innovative research to pioneer new fields of life cycle science, which aims to understand the biological phenomena related to the progression and transition of various life stages (from development and birth to aging and death). We welcome any research that will lead to conceptual advances in understanding the life cycle. Topics can include how organisms control life stage transitions, how they achieve long-term control across distinct life stages, metabolic/epigenetic/morphogenetic transitions in the life cycle, multi-organ interactions, stem cell-based tissue maintenance, homeostasis, cell-to-cell communication, transgenerational interactions (e.g. mother-to-fetal communication), and aging. We also welcome the incorporation of approaches that promote life cycle science, such as combining organ reconstruction methods, comparative studies of diverse animal models and primates including human subjects, approaches linking events at multiple scales from molecules to cells as well as tissues and organs, and implementation of other cutting-edge technologies.
- Opportunities provided by BDR -
BDR provides early-career PIs with an excellent environment for their independent research, including internationally competitive start-up packages and annual research funds as well as mentoring by experienced senior BDR PIs. New PIs will be provided with approximately 150 m2 of dedicated space for their laboratory and will also have the use of common equipment areas shared with other laboratories. All BDR researchers have access to cutting-edge facilities such as those for various animal models, mouse genome engineering, multi-scale imaging, omics, and structural biology. PIs will also have opportunities for active collaborations with medical institutions and industry, and for mentoring graduate students through several joint graduate school programs with affiliated graduate schools.
For more information, please visit the BDR website / PI recruitment introduction.

We welcome applications from women of any nationality to apply. RIKEN is actively undertaking initiatives to promote gender equality and diversity, and moving forward to establish a more diverse and vibrant research environment. In compliance with Article 8 of the Equal Employment Opportunity Law (Special Provisions of Measures Pertaining to Women Workers), this type of recruitment is carried out as a measure to attain adequate levels of female representation. The working language for all discussions open to BDR members is English.
