“Time-resolved chemiluminescence of firefly luciferin generated by dissolving oxygen in deoxygenated dimethyl sulfoxide containing potassium tert -butoxide”

【Significance】
Non-enzymatic color-tuning mechanism in chemiluminescence of firefly luciferin

The primary chemiexcitation process of firefly bioluminescence has been extensively studied, and is generally interpreted as a transducer from chemical to light energy. However, although bioluminescence has been exploited in medical and analytical chemistry, fundamental knowledge of this phenomenon remains lacking. For instance, how fireflies regulate the luminescent color in their luminous cells is unknown. This paper investigates the chemiluminescence of firefly luciferin in the absence of enzyme by dissolving oxygen in deoxygenated dimethyl sulfoxide; in particular, the action of the non-enzymatic color tuning mechanism. We thus propose a two-pathway mode to explain the observed two-color luminescence.
