Isolated mouse tracheal cilium

Species name: Mus musculus

Hamamatsu Univ Sch Med Koji Ikegami

A ciliary axoneme was isolated from mouse tracheal epithelia. It was attached onto the surface of glass slide, and then reactivated by 0.1 mM ATP. It shows clear an asymmetric beating pattern, in which the effective stroke is the right side and the recovery (also called, preparative) stroke is the left side.

Tubulin polyglutamylation is essential for airway ciliary function through the regulation of beating asymmetry [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 107(23), 10490-10495, 2010]
