Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

Species name: Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

Faculty of Science, Gakushuin University Ritsu Kamiya

Chlamydomonas, a uni-cellular green alga, usually swims through water by beating two anterior flagella. However, when attached onto a smooth solid surface, the cell displays gliding motility through active movement of the flagellar membrane, most likely driven by the intra-flagellar transport (IFT) system, an internal mechanism that functions to assemble and maintain the cilia/flagella structure.
