Species name: Craticula sp.

Graduate School of Life Science, University of Hyogo Nozomi YAMAOKA

Craticula sp. belongs to pinnate diatom and can glide over the substratum. This motion called the gliding motion. The gliding motion can move both of forward and backward. Furthermore, even if the top and bottom is overturned, the gliding motion is worked, but the cell doesn’t glide when it doesn’t attach to the substratum. This video is a very precious video recording the overturned motion of gliding diatom.
