In order to reconstitute the Z ring (bacterial division machinery) in liposomes, artificial membrane targeted FtsZ (FtsZ-YFP-mts) was created by adding an amphipathic helix (Membrane targeting sequence: mts) to the C terminal end of FtsZ fused with YFP. In this movie, the purified FtsZ-YFP-mts with GTP forms large Z rings and generates constriction force in the tubular-shaped multilamellar liposomes without any other division related proteins. These Z rings behave quite similar to the one in vivo in the movie “Z ring formation and constriction 2”. References 1. Reconstitution of contractile FtsZ rings in liposomes.
