Observation of Salmonella flagellar rotation by laser dark-field microscopy

Species name: Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium

Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University; National Food Research Institute, National Agriculture and Food Research Organization Shuichi Nakamura, Seishi Kudo, Yukio Magariyama

Leser dark-field microscopy was developed to analyze rotation of a single bacterial flagellum. This method not only enabled measuring flagellar rotation rates in Salmonella but also showed abrupt pauses and reversals accomplished within 1ms.
