Saltatory movement of Cyclidium sp.

Species name: Cyclidium sp.

Graduate School of Life Science, University of Hyogo Ryuji Yanase

This is the real-time motion image of Cyclidium sp. Cyclidium is a ciliate of a size of about 20 µm. Body cilia are long for its size and a cilium which is longer than body cilia grows on the posterior end of the cell. Also, Cyclidium has an organization in which cilia are linked with each other like a membrane around a cytostome called undulatory membrane. Cyclidium repeatedly performs a salutatory movement of moving suddenly as if jumping from a state of rest. It is uncertain how this movement is performed.
