Chromatids are aligned on the cellular equatorial plane during metaphase. Upon anaphase onset, each pair of sister chromatids is split and pulled apart to opposite cellular poles. Cell cleavage occurs between the separated chromosomes, so that genetic information can be equally provided to each daughter cell. Images were taken using a DIC microscope.
