Flavobacterium johnsoniae gliding motility

Species name: Flavobacterium johnsoniae

Nagasaki University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Daisuke Nakane

Most of species belonging to Bacteroides genus can move in a forward-backward way, rotate in a counter-clockwise and clockwise way on the surface of glass. However, the mechanism regarding to the motility is unknown. This video shows the motility of Flavobacterium johnosniae which can decompose chitin in the soils. It is considered that protease secretion from Pathogenic bacteria in teeth is related to gliding motility.
