Photophobic (photoshock) response of Chlamydomonas

Species name: Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

School of Bioscience and Biotechnology/Chemical Resources Laboratory, Tokyo Institute of Technology Yuta Nishimaki, Ken-ichi Wakabayashi

Photophobic (photoshock) response of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (x1/30 speed). Upon illumination with strong light (such as a flash), Chlamydomonas flagella undergo a waveform conversion from asymmetric (ciliary, breaststroke-like) type to symmetric (flagellar, dolphin-kick-like) type. This is regulated by Ca2+ influx to flagella to above ~10^-6 M.
