"Light-induced difference FTIR spectroscopy of primate blue-sensitive visual pigment at 163 K"

【Significance】
Primary batho-intermediate of visual pigments exhibits photoequilibrium with the unphotolyzed state. Such photochromic property was highly advantageous for the IR study of color visual pigments at 77 K. Although it was not applicable to late intermediates, presumably because of large structural changes to proteins, we found the photochromic property between monkey blue pigment and its BL intermediate at 163 K. Detailed FTIR analysis at 77 and 163 K provided structural information on the retinal chromophore, transmembrane helices, carboxylic acids and protein-bound water molecules, which reveals how primate blue pigment changes structures for signal transduction.
