【Significance】
Intracellular ATP effects on membrane stability of human erythrocytes under pressure

Phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of cytoskeletal proteins in the human erythrocyte membrane mediate the bilayer-cytoskeleton interaction that plays an important role in the membrane stability and deformability. However, there is few studies using whole cells on the relation between intracellular ATP levels and membrane stability. Responses, i.e. , vesiculation, fragmentation, and hemolysis, of erythrocytes to high pressure were greatly modulated by intracellular ATP levels. Vesiculation, particularly, size of released vesicles, was associated with the pressure- induced hemolysis. Thus, the present data provide useful information about in vivo vesiculation.
