“Effect of the MotB(D33N) mutation on stator assembly and rotation of the proton-driven bacterial flagellar motor”

【Editor's Summary】

Proton conductivity-dependent assembly kinetics of the flagellar motor stator

The Salmonella flagellar motor is a rotary nanomachine fueled by the electrochemical potential difference of protons across the cytoplasmic membrane. The stator dynamically associates with and dissociates from the motor during rotation but it remains unknown how it is regulated. Here, we report that a mutant stator lacking proton conductivity dissociates from the motor more rapidly and frequently than the wild-type. We propose that the binding affinity of the stator for the motor depends on proton conductivity through the channel.
